The Global Innovation Index (GII) 2020, the 13th edition was published on 2nd September. This year the theme of Global Innovation Index is "Who Will Finance Innovation?". The Global Innovation Index (GII) is mainly a yearly ranking of nations by their achievements in innovation. From the beginning of GII, the rankings are published by the Cornell University, INSEAD & WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization). They have also partnered with other associations and institutions. It is completely based on subjective as well as objective data which are derived from many other sources including the International Telecommunication Union, the World Bank and the World Economic Forum. 

The Global Innovation Index was inaugurated in the year 2007 by INSEAD and a British magazine called World Business. 

Depending on the scores in two sub-indices, one is the Innovation Input Index and the another one is Innovation Output Index, the GII is mainly computed. Infact it is composed of five and two pillars respectively. 

The Global Innovation Index is a leading reference for measuring an economy’s innovation performance. It mainly provides a detailed metrics about the innovation performance of 131 countries and economies around the world. 

How are Countries Ranked in GII? 

The Global Innovation Index (GII) are infact depends on 80 different indicators. These indicators explore a broad vision of innovation. It includes political environment, education, infrastructure and business sophistication.

In 2020, India jumps 4 places to rank 48 on Global Innovation Index 2020.

Last year in 2019, India was at 52nd position in the list but this year in 2020, India is at 48th position and India now in top 50 on global innovation list. Infact among the Central and Southern Asian countries India is at top position. This is for the first time India among top 50 nations in global innovation. The reason behind India's position is the steps taken by NITI Aayog. The Aayog give its importants on policy led innovations like electric vehicles, bio-technology, nanotechnology, space and various types of alternative energy sources.
